This resilient breed of sheep was first developed in the late 17th century in Rambouillet, France by selective breeding between the best Merino sheep in Spain. Brought to the United States in 1840, two-thirds of this hardy breed now resides in the Western Mountain Ranges of the United States. The Rambouillet breed boasts a long staple length giving the wool plenty of strength and durability. With a micron count of 20, it has the softness of a fine wool for next to skin softness, and fabulous bounce. This wool blends with other luxury fibers to add elasticity without compromising softness. The fleece is prized for being dense with square, matte fibers, and a defined crimp. This wool is brilliant for spinning and can be knit or crocheted into luxuriously soft garments. Rambouillet also takes dye beautifully and wet and needle felts with ease.
