What is the essence of treatment, and what lies at its very root?I have long pursued this question, seeking to uncover its answer by integrating not only the insights of Oriental medicine but also the findings of modern sciences such as neuroscience, physiology, anatomy, physics, biology, and psychology, all from an interdisciplinary perspective. As a result, what emerged before me was a vast landscape extending far beyond the conventional framework of “acupuncture and moxibustion.” In this vision, every form of therapy that exists in the world could be seen aligned along a single axis, spreading infinitely to the left and right. I came to realize that this might indeed be the “unified theory” that my two teachers had perceived—an encompassing vision of all therapeutic practices. It is crucial to emphasize that this does not mean discarding the diversity of existing therapeutic theories in order to impose a single, monolithic framework. Such was not the true intention of my teachers. Rather, the essence of their words was that each therapeutic method could continue to exist in its current form, while simultaneously being connected as part of a larger whole. The very adapter that connects them is nothing other than the “thermodynamics of life.”In NAIRM Neuro-Reflex Therapy, percutaneous stimulation is applied to skin regions across the body—including the auricle, back, scalp, abdomen, and limbs—through the use of acupuncture or moxibustion. These stimuli are intended to influence the brainstem and central nervous system by way of the cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and peripheral nerves, with particular emphasis on the vagus nerve. “Regulating the body and brain through the skin” is not merely a technique derived from empirical rules, but rather a highly practical and theoretical approach grounded in the very structure and function of living organisms. The conceptual foundation that underpins all of this is the framework of “the thermodynamics of life.”This book explains the concrete procedural steps of NAIRM Neuro-Reflex Therapy, accompanied by photographs and illustrations, while clarifying how each technique is based on the theoretical background of life’s thermodynamics. The goal is not to simply list techniques, but to address readers’ deeper questions: “Why does this method produce results?” and “Why is this specific site chosen?”Acupuncture, moxibustion, and therapeutic theories themselves are no exception. A theory is nothing more than a tool for treatment. No matter how refined the theory, it is people who employ it. Boasting about the excellence of a tool is meaningless if its use destroys the practitioner’s own body. Moreover, if the tool itself depletes the practitioner’s resources, then its purpose is utterly defeated. Some may say, “I am constantly cultivating my qi, so I do not worry about depletion.” Yet, as I once shared on X (formerly Twitter), there is the undeniable fact that Chinese martial artists who subjected themselves to rigorous training daily often died young from neurological or cardiovascular disorders. Likewise, a highly respected master of acupuncture whom I deeply admire once told me: “It was precisely because I was physically weak that I was able to continue for so long. The strong ones all left before me.”Life exists only in the act of living. Therefore, I must state this with emphasis: the human body is finite. The therapeutic system presented in this book has been constructed from the dual perspective of how to minimize the practitioner’s own exhaustion and how to simultaneously maximize therapeutic efficacy. The single most important message I wish to convey through this work is this:Do not sacrifice yourself.
